Chinese Cuisine Dominated by Staple Foods
China features many types of cuisine that encompass a wide variety of tastes. While the country’s foods feature a number of ingredients, some are more common than others. Among them, rice, spices, and teas are particularly common.
Rice – Rice plays a large role in many Chinese dishes and is a prevalent food in the country. Steamed rice is a staple, providing low cost meals to many poor families while being acceptable for even the most well off to enjoy. Many other dishes also utilize the grain and it is in high demand in all of China. As such, it is grown by thousands of farmers in the country, which provides a way to feed rural families while earning them a bit of money.
While the unique taste of Chinese foods are the result of many ingredients and the different styles of cooking, the spices used are based upon taste as well. Many dishes use large amounts of garlic or fresh root ginger, and peppers are also widely used. Other seasonings include oils, onions, and, as in other places around the world, salts.
Teas – Teas are another crucial part of Chinese cuisine and daily life. Teas are still very popular among all classes and in all areas of the country. Three areas in China are known for their exceptional teas, Jiangbei, Huanan, and Jiangnan, – it is here that most Chinese teas are made. Many kinds of teas can be found across the country, including green tea, black tea, white tea, and scented tea, and all suit different occasions. Divisions can even be drawn within single types of teas – green teas include Longjin, Mao Feng, and Hungsham. Each tea has different health uses and is available in most parts of China and across Asia.
Regional and Universal Foods
Foods that are unique to some areas, such as Sichuan, Shandong, Jiangsu, and Gungdong are eaten all around the world. Different regions use their own cooking methods and foods to create unique tastes. Jiangsu cooking is known for heavy braising and stewing of meats, while Sichuan commonly features baking. Beijing Roast Duck is a well-known regional food, which has been taken to countries all around the world. Yet despite their different styles, all areas include dried and salted foods – with such processes done to make the foods last longer.
China is well-known for its diverse selection of foods. It is no wonder so many different styles of cooking can be found. In a nation so large, one must expect to find a whole host of ways to cook. Despite regional differences, some ingredients are enjoyed universally. Just as in other places around the world, the foods that grow best can be manipulated in some pretty fascinating and unique ways.
