Chinese
Socialism
In todays times, or in 2009, the
economy of the Peoples Republic of China (PRC) embraces a large
amount of state ownership of the Chinese economy, being officially
known as Socialism with Chinese characteristics. All entities are
allowed to participate inside the market economy. The Chinese
economy is, thus, a form of socialist market economy, and is quite
different from market socialism and mixed economy. Though the state
holds the ownership of major enterprises, it does not interfere with
the market prices set by the market owners.
According to Deng Xiaoping, it is not
that only planning and market forces make up the differences between
socialism and capitalism in the China economy. A planned economy can
never influence socialism, as the former is controlled by capitalist
forces and the market economy by socialism. Both planning and market
forces can though control economic activities of China.
The PRC government states that without
abandoning Marxism, the government has developed certain concepts
and terms of Marxist theory to incorporate in its new economic
system. While the then ruling Communist Party further disagrees that
socialism cannot be mismatched with these economic policies, and
that the PRC is at the infant stage of socialism. This facilitates
the PRC to embark on economic policies required to form an
industrialized country.
As per the Marxist theory, it is evident
that China has progressed from various stages starting from a slave
society to a feudal society through to capitalist society and
socialist society and not the communist society. The Communist Party
of China interprets this as the 1949 revolution brought in a
permanent change in the political system of China from capitalism to
socialism knowing that China is a socialist economy today. But the
Maoists organizations, like the Maoist Internationalist Movement as
well as the Revolutionary Internationalist Movement argues that the
capturing of the Gang of Four converted China back to capitalist
in 1976.
While on June 30, 1984, Deng Xiaoping
stated that Marxism is quite necessary to be adopted to develop
productive forces. As said earlier, socialism is at the infant and
most important stage of communism and that its principles will be
applied to the entire economy at its advanced stage. It clearly
describes the superiority of the socialist system in terms of
development of productive forces more quickly than under the
capitalist system. It is all about eliminating poverty.
