Translation Associations
The Translation Associations are generally non-profit non-government organizations (NGO) registered with specific government department of the country in which they have operations. The International Translation Associations may also be recognized by organizations like UNESCO (e.g. International Federation of Translators). The Translation Association constitute of a Board of Directors that manage property, affairs and business of the association. The members of the association as mentioned in the byelaws of the respective Translation Association elect this Board of Directors.
There are roughly near about 20 International Translation Associations. The oldest of them all are two associations that were started in the year 1953. These two Translation Associations are namely International Association of Conference Interpreters (AIIC) and International Federation of Translators (IFT). AIIC is having headquarters in Switzerland and has presence in over 90 countries. IFT was founded in Paris with presence in about 50 countries. IFT is a Federation of Translation Associations from all over the globe and hence it has 60,000 members worldwide. Apart from the International Translation Associations almost every country has its own Translation Association that in return may or may not be associated with the International Federation.
The main objectives of International Translation Associations are: the first but not the least is of getting translators together. This is achieved either by enrolling translators themselves or Translation Associations from various locations. Secondly the Translation Associations aim at safe guarding interest of translators at the same time ensuring Ethical Practices and Professional Standards in international Translation business as a whole. In case of local Translation Associations of specific country the objective remains same but the boundaries are limited. The Translation Associations represent the profession as whole and act on behalf of the translators. Translation Associations may also play role of Arbitrator in case of solving disputes between translators and clients. Translation Associations help in creating awareness
in translators of new technologies in the field by organizing seminars, workshops and training sessions for various professionals working in field of translation. Some of the Translation Associations also offer certification exams for translators that make them learn the strategic planning and systematic execution of translation projects. The Translations Associations keeps on studying performance of various translators and honor outstanding performances by giving awards. This not only set ideal for others but also encourages other to work better.
The Translation Associations also take efforts in educating the clients that need translation services by publishing newsletters, reports and seminars. This also helps in generating more business for the translators.
Some of the renowned International Translation Associations apart from mentioned above are: International Association of Conference Translators (AITC), International Association for Translation and Intercultural Studies (IATIS), Localization Industry Standards Association (LISA) and World Arab Translators Association (WATA).
