The growing size of the billion-dollar translation industry is attracting new enthusiasts in this business worldwide and thus making professionals learn the translation certification process. In order to gain most out of this opportunity professionals new or old need to get certified either by an accredited organization locally or internationally. Getting certified by a well known organization helps one get short-listed easily while decisions of allotting translation jobs are been taken by prospective clients.
One needs to know the translation certification process correctly and completely before really going ahead for it. The translation certificate process may not be completely same for different organizations but the basics and the goals might almost be same that is getting quality in execution of translation work.
The translation certification process may have some basic steps like: -
Orientation training This training generally constitutes the important aspects that are required by the organization for getting the certificate. This training also highlights the ethics and legalities that need to be taken care of in the translation certification process and thereafter. This training also teaches the strategy planning and systematic execution of translation projects that needs to be taken care in everyday business once the translator receives the respective certification. -
Written Examination is one of the important step of the translation certification process. It emphasizes on the language proficiency as far as writing in some specific language is concerned. For example there is difference in spellings of words in written English if we compare US English script with that of United Kingdom. This applies to various other languages as well and to understand this difference one needs to be proficient in that respective language. Secondly the vocabulary is another point that is addressed in the written examination of the translation certification process. A small assignment is generally given for translation of say Mandarin (in case of Mandarin language certification) to English and/or vice versa. -
The translation certification process also has the oral examination that includes audio-visual round. In this examination one has to see and listen to one language (for e.g. English) and convert it simultaneously to other language (for e.g. Spanish) or the other way round. This needs real perfection of the language and one needs to be attentive for clearing oral examination in the translation certification process. -
Apart from written and oral examinations the Certification Board also does a character check and identification check that needs to be cleared for getting certified.
According to some certification boards a translator has to give exams or at least provide reports from time to time even after they have been allotted certification. This means the translation certification process is ongoing to keep a check of the standards of the respective certified translator.
